INTRODUCTION
Hallowed Island is a 3D Halloween-themed first-person shooter (FPS) that blends dungeon-crawling with classic Halloween stories. You find yourself stranded on a cursed island brimming with eerie secrets, undead creatures, and haunted locales. With low ammunition and no way out, you must traverse dimly lit pathways, uncover cryptic notes, and escape the clutches of the island's dreadful inhabitants.
STORYLINE
You arrive on Hallowed Island with no memory of how you got there. Through hidden notes and journals left behind by the long-gone townsfolk, you piece together the island's tragic past. An evil cult once inhabited this land, conducting forbidden rituals that tore open a portal, allowing monsters to enter our realm. Your quest is to:
- Explore abandoned villages, crypts, and graveyards.
- Discover lore items that explain the island's history.
- Complete side quests from ghostly NPCs, granting hints or items.
- Confront the final boss who guards the exit portal.
Each note pushes you deeper into the island's labyrinth, preparing you for a showdown with the malevolent force orchestrating the horrors.
GAMEPLAY
Hallowed Island features classic FPS controls with a few spooky twists. You'll manage limited ammunition, a limited inventory, and occasionally puzzle-based obstacles that require careful exploration to unlock. Gameplay includes:
- NPC AI: Enemies roam with patrol paths. Bosses are multi-phase fights that require reading attack patterns and exploiting weaknesses.
- Shooting: Guns have recoil and drop-off, so bullets do not work at distance, though most combat happens in claustrophobic spaces.
- Boss Fights: Each boss has unique phases and summoning, forcing you to dodge hazards, manage resources, and play strategically.
LEVEL DESIGN
The game is divided into interconnected zones: the Shoreline, the Abandoned Town, the Pumpkin Fields, and the Witches' Keep. Each area features handcrafted terrains, spooky ambience, and assets such as decrepit buildings, grave markers, jack-o'-lanterns, and twisted trees. We use Unity's terrain and lighting tools (tutorial here!) to create the landscapes and fog for its eerie effect. We also add real-time global illumination for torch-lit corridors and flickering lanterns, (hopefully) intensifying the sense of dread as you venture deeper into the island.
